In Memoriam: Peter Wiggins (B. 1960)

The Club is sad to inform its members of the recent death of Peter Wiggins, who won his Blue in 1960.

Wiggins came up to Cambridge from University College School, where he rowed with Michael Delahooke. Rowing at LMBC, he moved to the CUBC trialling squad for the 1960 Boat Race, where he was part of a crew that was not in favour with the press at the time with Jack Beresford going so far as to say that they were “not fully under control … there is a definite jerkiness and hurry about their work“.

The first half of the race played to the suspicions of Beresford, with OUBC establishing a 2 length lead at half way, but a combination of aggressive steering from Roger Weston and attacking racing from his crew brought the margin back, and it was only a late sprint from the Dark Blues which saved them from defeat, running out winners by 1.5 lengths.
