In memoriam: George Brown (B. 1959, 1960)

The Club is sad to report to its members the death of George Brown, double Blue and President of the CUBC in 1960.

Coming up to Trinity Hall in 1957 after a successful schoolboy career at Shrewsbury where he won the PE in 1955. He rowed in Trinity Hall’s Ladies’ Boats in 1958 and 1959, doubling up to stroke the Visitors’ crew for Trinity Hall in 1959.

Brown rowed in the 1959 Boat Race, and was elected President in 1960, rowing again in the 1960 Race, where it is recorded that he ameliorated his sorrows on the loss of the 1960 Race by becoming engaged on the night!

His engagement with rowing remained after coming fown from Cambridge, occupying positions as Captain of Leander from 1966 to 1968, then returning to Leander as President from 1999-2003. Brown was a Steward of the Regatta from 1969.

Our sympathies are with both his family and friends.
