CUBC’s Medallists at European Championships

CUBC’s students and alumni had a successful weekend at the European Rowing Championships in Munich this weekend.

The first A-Final of the week featured CUBC 2022 Blues Tom George and Ollie Wynne Griffith. Having come though the heat and semi undefeated, they faced a strong field. The fast-starting Romanians led to the 500 mark, and Tom and Ollie moved closed, drawing near level with 500 to go, but were unable to take the lead in the final 500, placing second and giving them fire for the World Championships.

A few minutes later, Freddie Davidson stroked the GB 4- to a fantastic victory, leading from the early strokes of the race, and never looked threatened as they under-rated the rest of the field.

The final GB race on Saturday was the M8+, coxed by alumnus Henry Fieldman. GBB led by two seconds 500m into the race, and were never headed, although as the Dutch recovered from a boat-stopping crab in the first 150m of the race, they did close the gap to GB.

Sunday’s racing included only one CUBC athlete, but in a performance that can only be described as dominant, Imogen Grant along with double scull partner Emily Craig, methodically demolished the field including Olympic Champions, Italy, to win by 7 seconds.

All five will be representing GB at the upcoming World Championships in Racice from September 21-25.
