Vale: Iain Brooksby (BB, 1966)

The Club is sad to report the death of Iain Brooksby, the cox of Goldie in 1965 and the Men’s Blue Boat in 1966. Coming to Cambridge after a successful coxing career at Radley, where he coxed the winning Princess Elizabeth crew to a course record, Iain read Medicine at St. John’s.

On graduation from Cambridge in 1966 he became an exceptional student at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London where he completed his training. He was appointed Consultant in Cardiology at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital at a comparatively young age.  He was an outstanding physician who was universally respected by both his colleagues and his many grateful patients.

In 1996 he was appointed Medical Director and Cardiologist at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Known by his colleagues as “Dr B”, he went on to spend a decade working as the Medical Director until his retirement in 2009. He served in this role during the transition from the former St. Stephen’s site in Norwich to its current home in Colney Lane in 2001, becoming a teaching hospital in 2002.

Iain will be remembered as a superb cardiologist, treating his patients with his trademark wit and humour and always with a twinkle in his eye.

Iain died on 29th October 2021 after battling cancer since 2018. He is survived by his wife Sarah and by his two children, Claire (matriculated at St John’s 1999) and Angus.
