In memoriam: David Maxwell (B. 71, 72)

The Club is sad to inform its members of the death of Double Blue Double Olympian David Maxwell.

Coming up to Cambridge from Eton, where he had won silver in 1968 in the 8+ at the FISA World Youth Championships and 1969, and the Visitors’ at Henley in 1969, he was part of two of CUBC’s most dominant crews.

In 1971 his Blue Boat took victory over Oxford by 10 lengths, and in 1972 he stroked Cambridge to a 9 1/2 length victory. 1972 was capped with a selection to the Olympics with fellow Blue Mike Hart, where they placed 8th in the coxed pair.

His rowing career continued after Cambridge with his notable results incluing silver in the 8+ at the Lucerne World Championships in 1974, and silver at the 1976 Montreal Olympics in the 8+. Maxwell was selected by Donald Legget at 2 in his all-time CUBC 8, describing him as “possibly the most talented natural oar I have ever coached”.

Our sympathies are with his family and his many friends.
