On Sunday 15 March, the provisional Goldie (men’s reserves) and men’s lightweight crews faced London Rowing Club in their final fixture before The Boat Race. In tough weather conditions it was a learning experience for Cambridge overall, who now return to Ely to fine tune their crews ahead 12-13 April.

Race Report: James Trotman, Cox
On a blustery early spring Sunday, the provisional Goldie crew lined up against London Rowing Club ‘A’ for the final fixture of the 2025 Boat Race campaign. Choosing the Middlesex station, the first piece was contested from Putney Bridge to Hammersmith Bridge, a slight shortening of the usual fixture pieces to allow both crews to taper for the Head of the River. Getting off to a bright start, Goldie drew out to a lead of around 3/4 length by Fulham Football Club. Facing challenging headwind conditions, both crews powered through white capped waves down the Crabtree Reach. Ultimately, a number of injuries in the Goldie crew, including the loss of stroke seat Matt Edge, meant that London were able to close in on Goldie and draw marginally ahead by the end of the piece.
The second piece, contested from the Eyot to the Bandstand, saw both crews get off to a bright start. In a short drag race, both crews traded blows, until London were able to use their bend to draw out to a slight lead.

Race Report: Theo Hatcher, 7 seat
The Cambridge Men’s Lightweights had their third official fixture over the weekend, against London Rowing Club’s ‘B’ crew. With two shorter pieces, Cambridge won the coin toss and chose the Middlesex station.
In the first piece, CUBC had a flying start, just pushing the bows out in front of LRC. Early warnings forced the Cambridge coxswain, Bella Fiske Harrison, to move apart. LRC, however, quickly settled into their superior base pace and pushed out ahead of CUBC approaching the black buoy. To negate Cambridge’s early Middlesex advantage, LRC broke to a length of clear water heading around Craven Cottage. Both crews then hit the rough water on Crabtree Reach, facing a strong headwind. LRC extended their lead, in the tough conditions before Hammersmith, eventually winning the first piece by 5 lengths at Hammersmith Bridge.
After spinning and a short break, the second piece began on opposite stations – Cambridge on Surrey and London on Middlesex. Knowing this piece was significantly shorter than usual, finishing at the Bandstand, both crews went out with ferocious intent. CUBC and LRC stayed level for longer than in the first piece, with good coxing and a clean start leading CUBC to take a couple of seats. Both crews were level as the water flattened out past the end of the Eyot. However, the faster base pace of LRC got the better of Cambridge again and London moved clear past the Chiswick Steps. LRC won by 2 1/2 lengths.
