Tuesday:
Tuesday afternoon was a pleasant introduction to the races for our PA 4+, drawing Edinburgh B. The CUBC crew took a half length lead by the end of the Island, and by the quarter mile had taken clear water on the Scottish crew. They extended their lead throughout the race and were able to drop the rate through the Enclosures and savour their ‘easily’ margin.

Wednesday:
After an eventful pre-paddle leading to the crew needing to find another boat for their 0900 race, the Visitors’ 4- raced Riverside BC from Boston. The Riverside crew was composed largely of former US lightweights, so were expected to have some good speed. The CUBC/Roskilde/Penn composite was not too worried about reputation, and put the Boston crew through their paces in recording a three length victory.

Thursday:
In the Island Challenge Cup, CUBC’s women’s crew raced powerhouses Oxford Brookes “B” and in a showing that should augur well for the rest of their week ran out victors over Brookes by half a length.

Later in the day, CUBC’s PA crew raced Cornell’s Lightweights in what had been anticipated to be a very challenging race. CUBC made light work of the Big Red, running out to an “easily” verdict.

Friday:
The racing commenced for CUBC crews at 1215, with the Visitors’ crew racing against American powerhouses and Eastern Sprints Champions from Brown University. The crews were evenly matched through the start of the race, with Brown fighting to draw out to a 1/3 length lead at Fawley, and able then to push out to a length lead as the crews entered the Enclosures. Brown sprinted through the last 500, enabling them to take a win by 2.5 lengths over a strong Cambridge / Roskilde / Penn crew.

At 1510, the PA 4+ raced against Oxford Brookes B in what promised to be a tight race given the two crews’ respective times througout the week. The CUBC crew, composed of representatives from the Club’s 3rd Men’s VIII and the Lightweight crew, was marginally outpaced off the start, but fought back well to maintain the margin inside 1 length as the crews passed the midpoint of the race where Brookes put in a strong move to be 2 lengths up at Remenham. CUBC moved back through the enclosures, but Brookes were able to control the race and win by 1.5 lengths over CUBC.

Racing was completed for the day for CUBC 20 minutes later, as the Island Challenge took on the University of Virginia in UVA’s final Henley campaign with coach Kevin Sauer, who retires after 29 years with Virginia. The race was not to be a celebration for UVA. Both crews started aggressively and were level at the end of the Island, with CUBC settling better and moving out to a 1/3 length lead by the Quarter Mile and a length at the Barrier. The Cavaliers fought back but to no avail as CUBC took clear water and moved to a length and a half as the crews made the Enclosures. Virginia threw everything at Cambridge, and moved back to overlap. CUBC were not to be denied and squeezed out a length and more on Virginia to win by just over 2 lengths.

Along with racing, the 1975 Lightweight crew participated in a reunion row at tea time, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Lightweight Intervarsity rowing at Cambridge.

remember John Barter, their original 7 seat, who died in 2023, and pay trinute to Donald Dumbell Conzett (Fitz) , their original 5 seat who is unable to row due to illness. JJ Williams and Charlie Temple-Richards, the 1975 spare men, row in their place.
Saturday:
CUBC’s Ladies’ Plate crew had their first race of the regatta, facing off against Oxford Brookes. Lining up against a strong Brookes line up, both crews started quickly with CUBC taking a slight lead at the end of the Island. That trend continued along the course as CUBC’s speed took its toll on Brookes and they moved out to a 1.5 length lead. Brookes attacked through Remenham, gaining overlap on CUBC and surging up their stern. CUBC would not be denied and absorbed the Brookes challenge and moved back out to a 1.5 length lead win.

The Club’s Island Challenge Cup crew raced against Oxford Brookes “A” having defeated Oxford Brookes “B” previously. Brookes “A” made a fast start and had moved out to 3/4 length lead at the 1/4 mile, and clear water at the Barrier. As the crews passed Remenham, CUBC sought to make an impact on Brookes’ lead which had extended to 2 lengths. Through the Enclosures, CUBC cut the margin to 1.5 lengths but Brookes were able to control the finish against a very classy CUBC crew and would go on to win the final the day after.

Sunday:
After a strong race against Oxford Brookes, CUBC lined up against Princeton’s 1V, who had placed 4th at the recent IRAs and 2nd at Eastern Sprints. The strong Princeton crew jumped out off the start, making a 1/3 length lead at the quarter mile and extending this to just under a length at the Barrier. Although CUBC was rowing cleanly and fast, the power of Princeton was telling past Fawley where the Americans stepped out to nearly a length lead but were unable to break clear past Remenham.
The Americans put in a giant surge into the Enclosures and as the stream favoured them were able to combine this and take the win by 2 and a half lengths after a great effort from CUBC.

CUBC would like to recognise our alumni members who raced at Henley this year, including Goldies Rob Harris and Reggie Mitchell who won the Thames with Thames RC, Megan Lee (WBB 2024) racing the Remenham Challenge Cup with a US Development crew, Millie Perrin (Blondie 2019) racing the Wargrave Challenge Cup with London “A”,and Freya Keto (WBB 22) who reached the final of the Stonor Challenge.
