With College Bumps racing concluded, 20 rowers and five coxes remained in Cambridge for an additional three weeks to take part in the Women’s Development Squad Camp.
The camp, led by coaches Matilda Horn and Ollie James, provided a valuable opportunity for athletes to gain first-hand experience of training at CUBC, helping to prepare them for the strongest possible start when pre-season begins in September. Over the three weeks, the squad followed a programme modelled on the Boat Race campaign, combining early morning water sessions, afternoon weight training, and a strength and conditioning programme developed by our partners at Viktus.
Alongside the regular training schedule, athletes took part in a series of educational sessions covering topics including nutrition and sports psychology. They also benefited from additional time on the Cam to develop their sculling skills in single sculls and, on occasion, their swimming skills as well.
As part of the programme, the athletes competed at two regattas: Kingston Regatta at the end of the second week and the British Rowing Senior Championships at the conclusion of the camp. For many, these events marked their first experience of racing outside Cambridge.
At Kingston Regatta, the squad enjoyed an impressive debut, winning two eights events and one fours event. Racing on the moving water of the River Thames also provided a valuable and eye-opening learning experience. Building on this early success, the openweight crew went on to claim gold in the Women’s Club Eight at the British Rowing Senior Championships, while the lightweight crew finished fifth in the same event.
The openweights returned to competition the following day in the Coxed Fours, recording outstanding results with crews finishing first, fourth and seventh. Congratulations to all who took part in the camp. We look forward to welcoming back those who plan to trial for CUBC in the 2026–27 season.
