CUBC Blues win World Cup 1

2022 Blues Ollie Wynne-Griffith (Peterhouse) and Tom George (Peterhouse), coached by CUBC Men’s Chief Coach Rob Baker, dominated the men’s pair in the first World Cup in Belgrade, Serbia.

After coming second at GB Trials by a canvas, the crew worked with Baker to modify their race strategy, and after a start which saw them just a few hundredths of a second behind GB 1 at the 500 metre mark, George and Wynne-Griffith moved through the field and were never headed, winning by clear water over the field.

In spite of a commanding performance, George was not satisfied, stating,

“I think we need a bit of work on that last 500m. We know we had clear water at 1,250m, but then things closed up. That’s what we’ll go away and work on ahead of the next races.”

2020 President and triple Blue Freddie Davidson stroked the GB 4- that put in a similarly strong performance, taking a solid win over the Netherlands and China with a final quarter that showed that they have yet more in the tank.

CUBC Blue Imogen Grant will join Ollie, Tom, and Freddie for World Rowing Cup 2 on June 17-19.
