In a great weekend at Lake Bled, Slovenia, CUBC alumni took 3 European Championships and 3 silver medals in one of the key lead up events to the 2023 World Championships, which form the main qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Imogen Grant retained her European Championship inthe LW2x with double scull partner Emily Craig, with a strong first 500 metres which enabled them to take control of the race and their victory was never in doubt.

Faced with a strong challenge from the Romanian 4- which saw the Romanians lead through the first 500,, Freddie Davidson’s GB 4- met their challenge with a dominant 2nd 500 which drove them to the lead at the 1k, a lead which they extended to over 3 seconds at the finish.

A 3 second margin was not the result which saw Henry Fieldman take an unexpected gold in the GB M8+. Fieldman was in Bled as the cox of the GB M8+ but added to his duties after Harry Brightmore was taken ill over the weekend. Fieldman led his crew to a wire-to-wire victory, narrowly holding off the charging Romanian 8 by just .05 of a second.

Tom George and Ollie Wynne-Grffith were led to the 1k by a fast starting Spanish pair, but drew to the front in the 3rd 500, leading Switzerland by .2 with 500 to go. An epic sprint developed, with the Swiss pair coming over the top of Tom and Ollie in the last strokes to take the win by .1 of a second.

Jan Helmich, sitting in the 2 seat of the GER PRMix4+ took a strong second behind the undefeated GB PRMix4+, with the British crew pushing to a 5 second win in the final km. Henry Fieldman’s race in the GB W8+ brought him another silver medal, as GB led Romania to the 500, but were overhauled in the 2nd 500 but maintained a comfortable lead over the Italian 8 which placed 3rd.
