Easter in China

Five of the happy CUWBC family spent the Easter weekend in Shaoxing, China, taking part in the world famous 2019 intercollegiate regatta. The Chinese Rowing Federation managed to organise a fierce competition between elite student athlete crews from all over the world, including Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Stanford, Sydney, Melbourne and from Chinese universities. Our team manager Fay Sandford (Blue Boat 2011, 2012, 2013) kept us hydrated in the (very) warm and humid conditions. She single handedly coached us to a 4th place overall, winning the B Final. Our coxless four composed of Peta Blundell (spare 2015, lightweight 2016), Izzi Boanas Evans (Blue Boat 2011, 2012), Zara Gooze (Blue Boat 2016) and myself (Blue Boat 2015, Lightweight 2017, Blondie 2019) enjoyed some close racing over 1000m from preliminaries through to semis and final. Sadly no trophy this time for us, (needless to say we won the party though), but we very much enjoyed the impressive traditional opening and closing ceremonies as well as the banquet in the Winning Hall.

We’ve also had the privilege to visit a local archaeological site and be hosted by the local school for a sporting forum. Shaoxing University also invited us for a cultural exchange and some dragon boat racing. Although coming out slightly damp from the latter experience, we’re flying back with some unforgettable moments and fantastic memories. Thanks again to the organizers and club members for making such exchanges possible. Shie Shie – BCNU China!
