Daphne Martschenko Elected as 2017/18 CUWBC President

Daphne Martschenko has been elected as CUWBC President for the 2018 Boat Races Campaign. She will be joined by Patricia Smith (Christ’s) as Vice President and Ellie Thompson (Newnham) as Lightweight Captain.

Daphne, a member of Magdalene College is studying for a PhD in Education and was in the 2015 and 2016 CUWBC Blue Boat. She learned to row at High School in the USA before moving to Stanford University. She has represented the USA twice at the World Rowing U23 Championships. Speaking on her election, Daphne said:

“It is an honor to continue the legacy and tradition of the CUWBC. It is with great privilege that I look forward to representing the Light Blue in the 2018 campaign and to driving forward a group of dedicated, compassionate, and process-driven women.”

Patricia Smith who learned to row at Cambridge was part of the winning reserve crew, Blondie, this year and the winning Lightweight 8 in 2015. Ellie Thompson joined Cambridge at the start of this academic year having previously rowed at Henley Rowing Club and Shiplake Vikings Rowing Club and was part of this year’s victorious lightweight crew.

The elections concluded with thanks to the outgoing Junior Committee; Ashton Brown (Fitzwilliam), Imogen Grant (Trinity) and Ellie Hopgood (Girton).
