Cambridge University Women’s Boat Club (CUWBC) has announced the line-ups for the two crews which will take on the traditional “Trial Eights” today (Monday 12 December 2016).
Chief Coach Rob Baker has selected two evenly matched crews who will race each other over the full 4¼ mile Boat Race course from Putney to Mortlake at 09:50 this morning. The Trial Eights race is designed to give squad members the closest possible rehearsal for the Boat Race and will followed by an Umpire’s launch, exactly as they will on 2nd April next year.
The selected rowers and coxes are drawn from 14 of the Cambridge University Colleges. Support is likely to be divided for Homerton, Lucy Cavendish and Gonville & Caius who have representatives in both crews. Both crews contain a mix of rowers who have learned to row through their college at Cambridge and also those who have represented their country at World Championships and Olympic Games.
The crews have been named “Hallam” and “Needs” in memory of Ed Hallam and Ron Needs. Both Ed and Ron are major figures in the club’s history having made such a positive impact on all the athletes they coached. Their commitment to excellence on the water and in the gym lives on strongly in the Squad and Club today.
