Cambridge University Women’s Boat Club (CUWBC) is delighted to announce the election of Siobhan Cassidy as Chair of the CUWBC Executive Committee at the Club’s AGM on Sunday 22nd April. Siobhan takes on the role after serving as Vice-Chair and succeeds Dr Cath Bishop who has been at the helm for the past 5 Boat Race Seasons.
During her time as Chair, Cath oversaw the successful move of the openweight races to the Tideway in 2015, the opening of the Ely Boathouse in 2016, and stunning Boat Race performances in 2017 and 2018.After the meeting, Cath shared her pride and thanks in being able to have the chance to lead and support the Club that had been so life-changing when learning to row at Cambridge in the 1990s: “It has been an honour and a privilege to be the Chair of CUWBC over the last 5 years, to see the Club continue to build on its platform of high performance and developing all who turn up to trial to reach their potential on and off the water. I am so pleased to be handing over to Siobhan who has already done so much to support the Club over the last few years. It has been a pleasure to work with Siobhan and I know she will be able to lead the Club and take CUWBC to the next level.”
Siobhan rowed in the winning Blue Boat of 1995 as a Graduate at Homerton College, having studied at Queen Mary and Westfield, University of London where she rowed for ULBC (University of London Boat Club) between 1991 and 1994. During that time, Siobhan represented Great Britain at the U23 World Rowing Championships and at the World Student Games.
Siobhan stated “I was inspired as a young girl in the 1970’s to study and row at Cambridge – watching the Boat Races on TV had a massive influence on me and changed the course of my life. It is an honour and privilege to take on this role, working with a dedicated volunteer and inspiring professional team to assist in the development of student rowers on and off the water and continue to build on the long, successful history of the Club.”
