Two squad members, Fay Sandford and Holly Game, travelled to Boston, Lincolnshire on Saturday 9th February to take part in the GB Rowing Team’s Second Winter Assessment Trials. The women’s assessment takes the form of a 5km time trial in single sculls and sees current GB squad members racing alongside aspiring athletes with both having their sights set on places in the GB crews for the 2013 international regatta season.
A couple of outings the week before gave Fay and Holly the chance to get back into their sculling, having spent the past few months exclusively in sweep boats and, despite some choppy outings, they felt well prepared going into the race. The day started off with sub-zero temperatures but by the time the racing was underway at 10am, the conditions were near perfect with a light tail breeze and a fast stream resulting in some fast times down the course. After getting off the water both felt that they had raced well, executing their race plans effectively.
The official results placed Holly 13th and Fay 15th among the U23 women’s single scullers. Overall, they found the experience to be very positive and a great opportunity to compete against some of the country’s fastest scullers.
Two CUWBC alumnae were also competing in Boston at the weekend. Lizzie Polgreen (Lwt ’09, Blondie ’10, Blue Boat ’11) and Fran Rawlins (Lwt ’07 & ’08) placed 3rd and 5th in the Lightweight women’s category.
