To commemorate Clean Sweep of six victories by Cambridge against Oxford in the Boat Races in 1993, the Hawks’ Club gathered all six crews together in Portugal Place for a photograph together with Lord Butterworth of the Hawks’ Club, John Thompson of Jet Photography took the photograph and the picture has adorned a wall in the Hawks’ since then as a reminder of the one and only time of a complete Cambridge whitewash in the Varsity Boat Races.
Repeating the photograph was an obvious way to celebrate this year’s Clean Sweep six victories over Oxford.
Pat Marsh, as a Trustee of the Hawks’ Charitable Trust and former Chairman of CUWBC, stepped forward to organise the photograph.
“Marshalling 54 student athletes during exams, Sir Leszek Borysiewicz and Graham Virgo of the Hawks’ Club, photographer, trophies some of which arrived from London with their own security guards in white gloves and worrying about the weather was indeed a challenge. Rowing the Boat Race may have been easier!”
The photograph was shot on the 12th June 2018 again by John Thompson, the weather was perfect, the trophies arrived complete with guards in white gloves and the all the crews turned up. The Hawks’ Club hosted a celebratory reception afterwards and the second photograph now adorns their walls. It is hoped that it is less than 25 years until the next Cambridge Clean Sweep.
