Sunday 9th December saw the squad head down to the tideway for the annual alumni sparring event. After a morning paddle and a toss for sides, the crews lined up to race over about 1k from Harrods to the IC boathouse flagpole.
First up was the CUW heavyweight crew against the alumni A crew. After a powerful start, the CUW crew pulled away, finishing several lengths ahead. Next, the CUW lightweight crew raced the alumni B crew. After some aggressive paddling into the rolling start and a blade clash, the race was restarted, the CUW crew eventually coming out on top, about a length clear. In the final race of the day, the two CUW crews lined up against one another. Another fast start from the heavyweight crew saw them pull ahead with the lightweight crew pulling back a couple of seats through the middle stages of the race, the final result was a win for the heavyweight crew after a solid push for the finish.
After the racing, mulled wine and mince pies were enjoyed in the IC boathouse with the opportunity for current squad members to chat to alumni. A special mention to Olympian alumnae Trisha Corless (GB Lwt 2x and Lwt4- silver medallist, 1996) and Kate Panter (2-, 1984) rowing at stroke and 5 of the alumni B crew respectively, as well as Sarah Winckless who we would like to thank for umpiring the races. Many thanks also go to Rachel and Laura, our alumni officers, for organising the event.
