The Cambridge Lightweights of 1999 had a wonderfully enjoyable reunion row on Saturday 6th April.
All of the original crew members were present in some capacity; 6 rowers and a cox in the boat, Lucy (nursing a back injury) in the launch, and even Helen was (virtually) there FaceTiming from New Zealand.
It was very exciting to see everyone again and to relive all our best moments from 20 years ago and to make new friends on the Putney river bank.
The row was surprisingly successful given that a number of us hadn’t been in a boat since the last millennium. Simon (“Dave”) the cox had retained all his former magic and kept us in line as we did an outing complete with exercises, long sections of paddling, a couple of (very mini) pieces and even starts.
After such strenuous exercise, we naturally adjourned to the Duke’s Head for some gin-based refreshment along with the 1999 and 2009 Men’s Blue Boat reunion crews before heading off to our crew dinner.
We would like to send a huge thank you to all the people who made the reunion such a success; Sean Gorvy and Matt Parish from the Crabtree Boat Club who lent us the boat, Alister Taylor from CUBC who gave our entourage the use of the Amaryllis launch, and our super subs Ruth Jenkins and Emily Booker who made the outing possible.
Plans are already underway for our quarter century get together in 2024!
