U23 World Championships 2018

CUBC at U23 World Championships

The week after Henley saw seat racing for the U23 World Championships in Poznan, Poland, and Blues Freddie Davidson and Hugo Ramambason were selected to cox and stroke respectively the GB 8+. Assistant Coach Richard Chambers was nominated as the crew coach and the crew justifiably looked towards racing with anticipation.

Meeting the American U23 8+ in the heat, the GB 8 went down narrowly to the Americans in by far the quickest of the two heats, forcing them to the repechage. In the repechage, Davidson and Ramambason were able to control the race within the first 500 metres, leading Canada to the repechage victory.

The final was an extraordinarily tight race, with the American 8+ getting out to a slender lead over Romania and GB, with GB lying in third for the first 1500 metres. Whilst the Americans extended their lead to just over a second by the finish line, setting a new U23 world best time of 5:22 in the process,  Freddie’s final sprint to the line pushed the GB 8 to overtake the Romanians by the slimmest of margins, the judges having to go to the photo finish to split the crews, with a margin of less than 1/100 of a second splitting the crews.

Earlier in the day, Chief Coach Rob Baker had taken his CUWBC charge Imogen Grant to a World Championship in the Lightweight 1x. Grant was never headed, winning her World Championship final by over 5 seconds.
