After his schooling at Windsor Boys where he was Head Boy, Mike Tovell came up to Cambridge in 1990, matriculating at Downing. In his first year at Cambridge, Mike stroked the Lightweight 8 to victory against OUL. He returned to CUL for the 1992 Lightweight Boat Races, once again stroking the Cambridge crew. In his final year, Mike trialled for the openweight crew, where he was spare in a year where Cambridge swept the boards, winning all six races.

On graduating from Cambridge, Mike joined the Paras, progressing to the rank of Major in quick time. On his exit from the forces, Mike demonstrated the same commitment to excellence in business, and continuing to row at Upper Thames with a number of his Cambridge contemporaries.
Sadly, in early 2019, Mike took his life. It is the hope of his family and friends that the naming of this boat for Mike motivates those who come after him, and encourages those who may be suffering to seek the support of their friends and family.
